Description

Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) is a family of fluorinated organic compounds historically used in many industrial and commercial applications, including firefighting foams, cookware, metal plating, food packaging, and stain protection coating.  Sites typically impacted by PFAS include fire training facilities, metals plating sites, fabric treating facilities, airports, DOD sites, landfills, POTWs, and water supply companies in affected areas.

This “emerging contaminant” is receiving substantial attention from regulators and the public due to several high-profile water supply impacts, very low (parts per trillion) levels of potential environmental significance, environmental persistence, and high mobility in groundwater supplies.  State and federal regulators continue to develop more and more stringent standards for PFAS chemicals, and are requiring potentially responsible parties to look for it more routinely.  The liabilities associated with PFAS releases can be substantial considering the potential for affecting public and private water supplies, extensive delineation requirements, and limited available remediation technologies.

Mr. Holden is a Senior Engineer with GEI located in the Ithaca, NY office.  He has over 25 years of experience in the investigation and remediation of industrial sites under various regulatory programs including Superfund, RCRA, TSCA, and the Massachusetts Contingency Plan. He is a registered Professional Engineer in NY, CT and MA, a Licensed Site Professional in MA, and a Licensed Environmental Professional in CT.  He holds degrees in Mechanical/Aeronautical and Civil/Environmental Engineering from Clarkson University.
