Emerging Contaminants in Focus: 6PPD-Q and Microplastics

The growing number of contaminants detected in the environment presents challenges for regulators, researchers, and practitioners seeking to understand potential risks and prioritize future evaluation. Emerging contaminants are often characterized by widespread occurrence, uncertainty regarding potential environmental and health impacts, and limited sampling and analysis methods.

This presentation will focus on how emerging contaminants are defined using recently published guidance and provide current case studies on two emerging contaminants receiving considerable interest: N-phenyl-phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q) and microplastics. We will examine sources, environmental occurrence, potential ecological and human health effects, and the factors driving interest in these emerging contaminants and the potential implications for industry, municipalities, and other regulated entities.
