Per and Poly-fluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) have been used in the manufacturing of a variety of consumer and industrial products since the 1950s.  in the last few decades and especially in the last 5 years, a realization that these substances may be having a harmful effect on humans and the environmental has come to light.  Governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations are actively working toward determining the extent of those impacts and alleviating future impacts. This presentation will provide a short background on PFAS and its uses, occurrences in New York State and current actions being taken by the State to find and address those impacts.

About the Speaker:  Susan Edwards is the Director of the Special Projects Remediation Bureau in the Division of Environmental Remediation at the NYSDEC where she directs staff on performance of major remediation projects, including the Hudson River, Onondaga Lake, Grasse River, Newtown Creek and the Navy/Grumman Site in Bethpage. A more recent special project area for the Bureau has been the planning and facilitation of remedial investigations and actions needed regarding emerging contaminants. From 2010-2017, Ms. Edwards was the Section Chief for Site Management with NYSDEC, developing plans for and overseeing operation and maintenance of State Superfund Sites across New York State. Previously, she was a project manager in the Division of Environmental Remediation overseeing cleanup of hazardous waste sites. She has also worked as an Engineer in the Division of Water- Clean Lakes Section at NYSDEC performing research on acid lakes and assisting local communities with developing protocols for the protection of small water bodies. Ms. Edwards received a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rochester in 1983. She is a professional engineer licensed in the State of New York.
