The Mount Morris Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the Genesee River. It is the largest dam of its type east of the Mississippi River and its purpose is to mitigate downstream flooding between Mount Morris and Lake Ontario. The Mt. Morris Dam was built between 1948 and 1952 by the Buffalo District office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The project was authorized by the United States Congress in the Flood Control Act of 1944 at a cost of $25 million.

This is a walking tour. Wear comfortable shoes. The walk involves a 1 mile round trip on a sloped roadway, which descends/ascends 150 feet in elevation ‘down to’ and ‘up from’ the top of the dam. From there, we will take an elevator down 200 feet into the dam, we then walk through tunnel ways (5’ wide x 7’ high) to explore the structure. Be prepared for the weather; about half of the walking tour takes place outdoors. The temperature inside the dam will be between 40°F and 50°F year round.

It is required that all tour participants sign the Mount Morris Dam Tour Liability Waiver; completion is required for everyone participating in the tour. ***Valid photo ID is required for all tour participants 18 years of age or older. Adults without photo ID will not be permitted on tour.***
